Store pickup vs delivery for garage appliances
When a dolly is enough, when freight is the grown-up choice, and what to measure in a one-car bay.

A garage fridge, a boxed workbench, or a walk-behind mower can be a pickup. A full-size range or a rider mower is usually freight. The mistake is treating a one-car bay like a loading dock. This page is measurement and logistics, not a moving-company review.
Measure the path, not just the product
- Door width and height, including the storm door that nobody remembers.
- Turn into the garage from the driveway — a 12-foot bay with a parked car is not a corridor.
- Stairs, gravel, and a slope that looks fine until you are on the downhill side of a fridge.
- Whether the appliance manual forbids laying it on its side (compressors have opinions).
| Spec | Planning figure |
|---|---|
| Walk-behind mower / bench kit | Often pickup: two people, a hatchback or small SUV, straps |
| Garage fridge / window AC | Pickup only if the path is short, level, and you will not tip a compressor |
| Range, washer, rider | Delivery or a proper crew; a consumer dolly is not a freight gate |
| Haul-away | Budget it. Dumping an old fridge on a curb is how people get fined |
Straps and a second person
Shoulder straps do not make a 300 lb cabinet light. They spread load. Use a second adult. If the listing offers delivery with haul-away for less than an ER visit, that is the grown-up math.
| Spec | Planning figure |
|---|---|
| When straps help | Boxed kits, empty cabinets, a short level path |
| When they do not | Stairs, tight 12-ft bays, appliances the manual says to keep upright |
Retailer logistics
Lowe's pickup is the usual local desk. Overstock/Beyond is more often a ship-to-home or freight appointment. Amazon varies by SKI size. Cookie windows still apply if you click then wait — see Overstock vs Lowe's vs Amazon. For a grill crate, go back to gas vs pellet.
